What to expect during your ear wax removal appointment

Step 1: Ear Examination

On the day we will begin with a complete video otoscopy of your ears - a live feed of your ear canals, ear wax and eardrums can be watched on a screen.

Step 2: Selecting The Method

After the examination, your clinician will select the most appropriate method to remove any wax and explain the process - which could be micro-suction, irrigation, manual removal or a combination.

Step 3: Removing The Wax

Once the wax is removed we will perform a follow-up video otoscopy to show you the clear, improved condition inside your ears.

Microsuction Ear Wax Removal

Microsuction is a specialised procedure using a gentle suction device to remove wax and debris. It does not involve inserting liquids into the ear, making it less messy and reducing the risk of infection.

We specialise in microsuction because it provides immediate relief with minimal risk, making it a preferred choice for many patients and ear care professionals.

Ear Irrigation or ‘Syringing’

Another effective method we utilise is ear irrigation, a tried-and-true technique that gently flushes out excess wax using a controlled stream of water.

The procedure involves the use of a specialised syringe filled with a warm, sterile water solution to gently cleanse the ear canal. This method is particularly useful for softening and removing layers of ear wax that have built up over time.

Preparing for your appointment

We require olive oil to be applied to the ears for a minimum of 3 to 5 days leading up to an appointment.

Consistently applying olive oil will soften ear wax, making it much easier and more comfortable to remove.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ear wax removal safe?

Yes, it is safe but also an invasive procedure with the potential to cause discomfort or injury and must therefore be treated with care by a trained specialist like those at Andrew Bird Hearing.

Does ear wax removal hurt?

No, procedures are not often painful but may be slightly uncomfortable at times.

If olive oil is applied to the ears for at least 5 to 7 days before to soften the wax, it is much easier and more comfortable to remove.

Do we see children?

Unfortunately we cannot see anyone under the age of 19.

Sorry for any inconvenience.
